RESEARCH SKILLS

The seconds research group in the CSCL which I was involved in was the Mobile Teaching. This research group consists of six members, Prof. Kyungbin Kwon, and five graduate students from the department of Instructional Systems Technology (IST) at IU. The purpose of this study is to examine middle school teacher’s perception and attitude toward using iPads in the classroom. And this study is currently in the data collection process.

Because this study is still underway, project tasks are yet to be clearly assigned. However, the theoretical framework and the research questions were already identified during the initial meetings. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) will be used as the main guiding theoretical framework for the study. Furthermore, survey items and interview questions were developed. My main role included three main tasks, first, developing the research questions, secondly designing and developing the survey items, and lastly developing the interview questions.

CSCL is a research group led by Prof. Kyungbin Kwon at Indiana University (IU). There are about 10 students who are interested in examining student learning supported by a computer or an online learning platform. Currently, five research projects are underway. I am involved with two sub-research groups in CSCL which are peer critiques and mobile teaching.

ONLINE ENGAGEMENT

Online Engagement is a research group in which three graduate students recently collaborated to examine how students engage in an online learning environment. Data were collected in a graduate-level online course which is delivered via synchronous chats and weekly discussions. The interpretive paradigm in social sciences will be used to analyze the data, and this study is still being developed.

Currently, my role in the team is to conduct the content analysis by using NVivio software, which is mostly used in qualitative methods. In addition, I am assisting in writing the literature review.

Center for Research on Learning and Technology is a research center established to advance the use of technology in educational settings. Many researchers, including faculty and students, are working in this center to develop innovative research projects. As an intern, I am involved with the projects led by Prof. Daniel T. Hickey from the department of Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University. For more information, click here to go the CRLT's website.

In this section below, you will find my research experiences from several research projects. The detailed information about the projects, my role, and the "skills gained" section.

Peer Critique in the CSCL is the research group and it was also led by Prof. Kyungbin Kwon. Two graduate students from the department of Instructional Systems Technology (IST) at IU were involved in this research group in order to conduct the content analysis and to write the literature review. The purpose of this study is to examine how students are critiquing peer's work on WIKI discussion board. This study is currently in the data analyses process.

In the study, I tested and developed the coding theme, initially created by Prof. Kwon. Data were collected from an undergraduate course of a midwestern university. My role in this study included conducting the content analysis and improving the coding theme. Currently, I am writing the literature review for this study.

The research project I am involved in is to examine the impact of peer reviews, including the impact of digital badges on peer's work in an online learning environment. Data were collected through an online discussion platform of an undergraduate course. In order to create a collaborative and productive discussions, students were guided how to use online badges as a reward while completing peer reviews at the beginning of the semester. My role in this research was to conduct a content analysis by using and developing the coding theme initially created by Prof. Hickey, and his study is still underway.
